My Students
The students I serve are 24 energetic, problem-solving, question asking, creative, hands-on diverse learners from all parts of the USA. They enjoy learning about science, technology, reading engineering, arts, writing and math.
The students attend a Virtual Title I school in Florissant, MO, where Ferguson, MO is our neighboring city, site of the 2014 uprising.
Many of the students receive free and reduced-price lunch and many are new to the school community. Some students come from situations where there are limited incomes and opportunities for cultural experiences. Three students are new to the school community this year and four are English Language Learners. Only one-fourth of my students read on grade level. There is no book store in the city.
They love to share ideas, communicate by ZOOM and email, solve problems, and are eager to learn new things. They like to participate on EPIC Reading for silent reading. They also love to read and learn about STREAM careers, people and concepts. I have several students who want to pursue STREAM careers.
My Project
It takes a village to educate a child during the Covid-19 Pandemic! Do you remember the first time you received recognition for working hard during virtual learning by MAIL? Do you read only using online books? My students need to receive recognition by mail for hard works through incentives to stay motivated during virtual learning. The books and dry erase boards will give them a feeling of being in a Brick & Mortar Classroom and reduce anxiety.
Students will receive incentives of stickers and pencils weekly by mail and books will be provided to help with Reading and Writing standards.
Supplies will be used for activities and assignments during Daily ZOOM Meetings. Dry-erase boards and markers will be used by students to show their thinking in math, reading, and writing so their understanding and strengths can be assessed. The dry erase boards and spiral notebooks will be used to respond to daily research questions, solve problems in math, and draw vocabulary word definitions. The pencils and stickers will be mailed weekly when they meet their weekly reading goal. The books will be used in reading and social studies to meet grade-level standards in fiction and nonfiction text. Students will receive one copy of one book to have at home to mark up for when we study text features.
These supplies will help reduce screen time during ZOOM Meetings. The incentives will keep students motivated and put a smile on their faces when they receive snail mail. The books, dry erase boards, markers, spirals, and pencils will give them a glimpse of being in a REAL Classroom by having the same supplies.
Supplies will be picked up by parents. This supply pick-up gives me an opportunity to meet families in person for the first time.
