My Students
We are a Title I, K-5 elementary school located in the heart of North Portland. We are a majority Black and Brown student community with a diverse population of over 18 different languages. 100 percent of our students receive free school lunch. We try and address as many needs as possible at our school, but often lack the funding to provide the supports we need.
Many of our English Language Learners come to our school with no prior schooling.
The challenge of learning English and building proficiency in content subjects is overwhelming for many of our students. A lack of prior schooling has many of our refugee students completing schoolwork several grade levels behind their peers.
My Project
Field trips this year have really been limited under COVID 19 guidance. The purpose of this Donorschoose is to take our kids on virtual field trips in small group settings. Help us take advantage of Giving Tuesday November 30th and qualify for a 50% match for our community!

Before Covid 19 we would often setup VR environments for our ESL students and travel to their country of birth through Google maps. Sadly, Google ended the free program in the middle of 2020 shutting down this opportunity for students.
Fortunately, The Oculus Quest 2 has similar VR programs we can use to take our students to new places and as an added bonus several language learning applications to practice English in a VR setting. Our students are familiar with using VR programs to explore the world. Help us fund this opportunity and bring back something we used to have in the classroom before COVID!
