This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach at a unique urban school. My students come from a variety of backgrounds. I teach students in kindergarten through fifth grade, and many of them have individual needs that do not allow them to attend a traditional school on a daily basis.
Many of my students have emotional and social issues, frequent medical treatments, safety concerns, difficulty in a traditional school setting and/or are homeless.
My students each face their own challenges every day outside of school. Some are grade levels behind and others are grade levels ahead.
My Project
These books and teacher created support lessons will engage students and allow them to "be on the same page" literally while they read and interact as they participate in a virtual book club via Zoom. Students will critically read and digest the stories, developing comprehension skills, analytical skills, as well as oral reading skills. Students will read to each other, pop-corn read, and follow along as I read. I have selected stories that have a positive social message and that I believe to be engaging for my students.
My students have been isolated at home for months and these new books will provide them interesting and engaging content while allowing them to improve their reading skills and strategies as well as share and discuss their ideas.
