Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My enthusiastic middle school students love music and are extremely curious about learning different types of musical instruments. The majority of my students live and play in the South Bronx, the Mott Haven community.
These students have the qualities to commit and learn a new language, why not learn a third language, in music!
A high percentage of our students are English Language Learners (ELL) and special needs students from the South Bronx, the lowest income congressional district in the United States. Our students learn in both English and Spanish, and our teachers make every effort to create experiential learning moments for our students. Our students learn best when engaged and motivated for a purpose, utilizing two languages to express their learning and understanding.
We know the ADS approach to learning is working because our students are truly excited about learning every day. They are hard-working and committed, and dedicated to always improving. With these qualities, I truly believe they make amazing personal accomplishments.
My Project
These students want to be successful musically and need the tools to do so. They have been introduced to basic notes, rhythms/beats, scales and their applications as to drums, pianos, and vocally. Now, we are moving on and committing to playing 30 violins, as our school's inaugural strings program.
This program allows students, without access to musical instruments or the proper training, the opportunity to learn, master, and play the violin.
All this can happen within the South Bronx! The American Dream School music department is a growing program, hungry for hands-on musical experiences. With a supply of violins, our South Bronx students will have the opportunity to grow as musicians and to put their enthusiasm and commitment to work.
