As my middle school orchestra program grows, I am delighted by the fact that my orchestra classes are becoming more diverse! Approximately half of my students require the school to provide an instrument for them. My biggest challenge is getting a quality instrument into every student's hands.
I teach over 200 middle school orchestra students at two schools.
Approximately half of my students receive free or reduced lunch. My class sizes are all over 30, some closer to 50 and my students care about music. They work hard, and they want to excel. Every single day, they make me laugh, teach me to see the world in a new way, and challenge me to be a better teacher than I was yesterday.
My Project
This violin will be used by a student who would not be able to afford to play in the school orchestra without an instrument provided by the school. The student will learn to play an instrument, be a part of a musical ensemble, perform in concerts, and be exposed to new worlds in instrumental music education.
Music is important.
In the world of increased testing, we in education are becoming blinded by data. It's easy to miss the talents that children possess if we only look at their test scores. Every day, I help students find their passion. I challenge them to think critically and to take positive risks. This is only one violin, but to the child who gets to play it, it may open doors that he/she never even knew existed.
