My Project
I am an intervention specialist, and many of my students have unthinkable home lives and have experienced traumas that I can't even imagine. Sadly, many of these students resort to fighting and violence as the answer. Other kids caught in the crossfire voice their motto, "Snitches cause stitches." Overall, the disheartening environment breeds more violence.
I am hoping to use the book Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds to show students that there are alternatives to violence regardless of circumstance, history, and home life.
The book is a riveting tale told from a 15-year old's perspective, the age of most of my students. Reynolds does a remarkable job of depicting the feelings of teens affected by gun violence. If I can touch even a few students by exploring Reynold's beautifully written tale of hope and change, I will have made a difference.
All in all, I want students to start talking about the issue of guns and violence and that there are alternatives to their narrative. I want to give students hope and courage for a stronger future.
