This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We have a diverse population of almost entirely minority students, in attendance, including many English learners, and several students who are barely speaking any English. We have great staff members who love the kids and support them in all aspects of their education. Safety is our number one priority in my school.

We hope to provide a well-rounded music education, where music class is “cool,” and kids look forward to coming to class.

We are finding ourselves in need of some supplies to help maintain our growing music program.

My Project

Recently I was asked to take over the orchestra program at my school. As a saxophonist, I was a bit hesitant, but I studied and I have become much more confident in my playing and teaching abilities. With this comfort and improving skills, I have found out that my school doesn't have any real violas. The previous teacher simply restrung violins with viola strings. To an untrained musician, this can work but the instrument does not resonate the way a viola will. I didn't realize this was our situation until I learned what to look for. I'm very disappointed that we don't have this wonderful resonant instrument available. I want this orchestra to succeed and excel. One step to help make this happen will be having quality Violas available for my wonderful young musicians.
