This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I serve as the student newspaper adviser at my high school and I have dreamed of fostering a shared appreciation for music and vinyl records by creating a listening station in a corner of my classroom. My room often serves as a second home for students who are looking for a refuge from the stress of high school life. I often have students who come to my classroom during lunch and after school to have a safe place to destress and relax. I will encourage students to build a classroom collection of vinyl records based on scouring second-hand stories and record stores in Austin as well as the vinyl records that some students inherit from older relatives.
This vinyl listening station will provide my students with a shared appreciation for music collecting as they practice caring for and maintaining our classroom record collection.
We can also use the collection to have classroom discussions about favorite musical artists, the visual design of the cover art, liner notes and other design aspects. And the music itself will improve the atmosphere of my classroom, especially when we work after school on producing the school newspaper.
