Relevance, rigor, relationships, responsibility and respect. Those are the five "R"s of our High School and the driving force behind what we do. Our school is an alternative school for students who are 16 or older and at least one year behind in credits. Students from all over the district interview, along with their parents, for a chance to come join our program. We offer the students the standard curriculum at an accelerated pace so that they can possibly catch up with their peers and graduate on time. To assist the students the best way we can, our school fosters a "family" environment by only accepting 175 students in the program. Our class sizes are 15 or less, and there are only 17 teachers on campus. Every student knows every teacher. For many of our students, this is their last chance, the last hope they have for actually receiving their high school diploma.

Most of our students have struggled with being successful in a traditional school environment for years. Some of their problems stem from difficult home lives with uninvolved parents, some struggle with overcoming drug or alcohol abuse, some have survived horrible medical conditions, and still others just have a hard time "fitting in" with their peers. Whatever their reason for falling behind, they are all dedicated to finishing high school. Our students have a wide range of academic needs, but all of them have one thing in common: school has never been a positive experience. We are committed to changing that for our students and showing them that school can be a safe place, and a place where they can receive all the tools they need to be successful when they leave.

Every student in our building, regardless of academic level, is required to take a reading class. The entire staff is involved; every teacher, regardless of discipline, teaches a reading class. We use this time to really delve into meaningful issues that affect our students' lives. We have a large amount of nonfiction material at our disposal, but we are in desperate need of high interest, young adult novels to take our program to the next level. These books will not only help us to engage our students in meaningful discussion, but it will also show our students that books can be a safe source of comfort and escape in a difficult situation. The books we have chosen all deal with controversial issues that our at-risk teens face: drug abuse, bullying, teen relationships and free speech. These novels all come from the American Library Association's list of best Young Adult literature. The writing is powerful and meaningful, and the students will no doubt feel connected to the lives of the characters.

Our faculty is committed to the power of reading and literature. We all understand that it is the one skill that everyone will need, regardless of profession to be successful. This project and these books will give us a chance to show our students how other teens, how other successful adults, have handled difficult situations, and hopefully give them the tools to pull themselves out of the situations in which they have found themselves.
