This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach at an incredible dual-immersion school in the heart of downtown Stockton, CA. This is one of the lowest socioeconomic area codes in the state of California. None of this seems to matter to these students. They show up online or come to school from their neighborhoods ready to learn, and they come prepared as best they can even when the only way to connect is apartment Wi-Fi or a hotspot.

The first thing you notice about these students is they want to learn and move ahead to get above their current circumstances.

Another incredible aspect of these students is their attitude. They don't complain about how bad things are, and they come to see how they can better themselves and their families.

I am the 6th grade teacher, and I have 28 students ready to learn every day. It is a joy to come to a classroom where the students make you want to be a better teacher.

My Project

With these high quality telescopes, I will be able to show my students that planets, moons, stars, and nebulas do exist in the night sky. I can prove to my students that they are not just pictures in a book.

I am connecting with the local colleges and astronomy groups to help us get the most learning out of these telescopes by creating Telescope Nights.

At these events, both my students and parents will be invited.

Ultimately, I want to infuse this science back into our schools to teach problem solving, math, and possibilities that the universe may provide.
