Viewing the 21st Century

My students need one LCD projector.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Heitz's classroom raised $996

This project is fully funded

With the first decade of the 21st Century almost over, one truth is blatantly apparent: Long-gone are the days when students were content to sit and read from a textbook, and long-gone are the days when educators pretended that was best practice. As I observe my 7th and 8th grade science students on a daily basis, the word “technology” imprints itself into my mind. I can't turn my head without seeing a student texting the latest news to a friend or walk down the hall without spotting a student with an I-pod glued to his or her hand. Students today thrive on technology and media; it's motivating to them. This rings true for my “typical” middle school student, as well as my English Language Learners and my Special Education students who are an integral part of my inclusive classroom. My students need access to media that will motivate them to learn and encourage them to see how science is an integral part of their lives.

A great quality of science is the amazing amount of information it incorporates; however, finding ways to help students comprehend the information and motivate them to learn it can be very challenging. This is especially true when many scientific concepts are abstract or not accessible first-hand. One way to make information more accessible and meaningful to students is the use of visual media. With easy access to an LCD projector, I can take advantage of video streaming by downloading current videos that will put into pictures and simulations what can’t be fully understood with words. In addition, I can expose students to relevant websites that provide real-world applications of science. For instance, when we study space, what better way to engage students than to show them live video feed from the astronauts on the International Space Station or pictures of nebulae and solar flares? It’s obvious that students need to care about the information before they will spend effort learning it. Therefore, the key to improving students’ class participation, retention of information, and buy-in to the content is hooking them with the visual media that many students thrive on.

With your generous purchase of an LCD projector for my classroom, all of my students, including my English Language Learners and Special Education students would reap the benefits. The limits to the ways in which we could utilize the projector are endless. Not only could I use it to present visual media to my students, but they could, in-turn, use it to communicate information to their peers through slide shows, PowerPoint presentations, or authentic videos. This is your chance to get students motivated to become constructive questioners and thinkers about how the world works. These children are not only the future of advancements in science, but also the future of our community and our world.

We all know that technology is a must in school today. The problem is finding the money to purchase the equipment that will keep my classroom up-to-date and help my students stay motivated to learn. You have the power to make my classroom into a 21st Century classroom full of motivated, engaged, and enthusiastic students.
