I serve a Title I District of students trying to break the chain of poverty. They are intelligent, driven, and in desperate need of support and direction. My students' reading skills are terribly deficient. Exposing them to a variety of texts gives them the upper hand on reading and processing information. They need help filling out college applications and job applications. This would allow me to help. Displaying geographical statistics encourages their success for whatever their chosen field of employment. Please, help me help them!
My Project
In the process of helping students read, they need to actually see the text. Having a document camera allows me the opportunity to help them with filling out job applications, demonstrating visuals and technical instructions for jobs like welding and displaying graphs and structures for engineering. This will enable students to read documents as the documents are read aloud. Research has shown seeing documents that are read to individuals allows those individuals to mimic inflections, tones, and exposes them to words they may otherwise not see. This process has proven to increase reading skills and overall comprehension during their own reading.
