Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach children with autism and other developmental disorders at a public school in East Harlem. Our school has a dedicated and caring staff, but we lack resources to best support the extensive educational needs of the children with autism.
Children who have autism have a very hard time relating with their peers. At times the children can isolate themselves, spending much of their time engaging in self-stimulating behaviors, or attempt to interact with their peers, but do so inappropriately because their disorder prevents them from picking up on social cues. For example, a child with autism may stand very close to a peer and make their peer feel uncomfortable, or he/she may not know how to respond to common questions such as, “What’s up?” As a teacher I feel that providing the tools to create a bridge between these special children and their typically developing peers is critical to development. It is only through enhanced social interactions that a child with autism can ever learn to joy of friendship.
A great way to teach these skills is through modeling, or continuously showing the child how to interact correctly. I would like to make videos of the children doing the correct behavior and have the students watch the videos each day on our classroom computers to reinforce appropriate behaviors. To do this I will need a digital video camera. Your support to get a video socialization program going in our school would give students with autism a chance to make new friends in school and build relationships throughout their lifetimes.
