Video Production Using Smartphones

Help me give my students the basic tools to get them started in class on video production with mics, smartphone rigs, and gear that will help them use tools they already have access to and improve their video quality.

My Project

This year was a trial to see if there was an interest in video production and editing. The student demand was astounding! My class has been full each trimester with a wait list. As we finish this school year, I am looking over what we could do to start next year off even stronger.

I want to show my students that with some basic tools to improve stability and sound, students can create full length works of art using their favorite tool, their smartphone.

Accessibility can change lives. Smartphones are the new norm and the cameras they possess keep getting better and better. I can't afford to build a collection of professional cameras for my videography students, so instead I want to teach them how to improve on what they already have in their back pocket. This makes the most sense long term because it will allow them to gain skills that they can use even after they've left my classroom.

With this project, I am asking for a few universal stability rigs that will help hold student's phones safely and allow them to move smoothly during filming. These rigs also have locations for accessories like microphones and lighting to connect.

In-camera sound is hard to control and there is always wind and background noise that make filming very difficult. I have included a boom mic, shotgun mics, and lapel mics with noise cancelling to allow students better audio to edit for their productions.

These items are just a start and we will one day be able to grow the program and grow our equipment and tools.
