This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Over the past two years, I have been an advisor to the video game club at a Title 1 school. I have opened up my classroom during lunch for all students on campus to come in and enjoy playing video games with others who also want to play. Each day we average around 30 students who come in, have lunch, and play games. Along with this, we hold tournaments each semester for students to compete in and earn a trophy or prize. When we hold tournaments I have been charging a maximum of $5 to get in if they can pay, otherwise I haven't been charging any money.
With all this in mind, over the past two years, I have been having to bring and leave my own video games and consoles on campus for students to use.
The money we have managed to get from holding tournaments has either been used to buy the tournament prize/trophy, or expansion packs for characters in the games we have been playing. There have been times when I have had to pay for things out of pocket, like new controllers for students to use.
My goal has always been for the club to have its own switch console so that I can hold more free tournaments for students as well as have a console that I can leave for the club in case I leave the school at any point. Along with this, I would like to hold tournaments so that we can raise money for charity rather than trying to raise money for the club itself.
