My Students

I teach in an integrated preschool classroom comprised of 20 students. The students attend school all day, and for many of them, this is their very first formal school experience. Eight of the students receive special education services and are on an Individualized Education Plan (IEP). The remaining twelve students are not on an IEP. All students receive free breakfast and lunch. Some of our students receive services under Project ACT, which is a district agency that provides direct instructional and support services to children and youth residing in temporary emergency shelters, traditional housing and doubled-up students staying with other families due to loss of housing, economic hardship or similar situations.

Some of the students on an IEP present with more intense needs, and we have a few students who are non-verbal or have very limited verbal communication.

We are finding an increasing need to create picture cards and schedules to allow them to communicate and interact with the things and people around them effectively.

Our classroom is a safe, predictable, comfortable, encouraging, exploratory environment that allows them to take chances, make mistakes, work cooperatively, and develop new skills.

My Project

Some of our students are non-verbal or have very intense communication needs. They need visuals and picture cards to help them communicate, understand directions, and complete learning activities. We need to be able to print these pictures and visual supports in color. Having these picture cards will allow students who struggle to communicate to express their wants, needs, feelings, and ideas with others around them. It will also provide support to help them complete learning activities and make choices within the classroom. We want all members of our class to be able to fully participate!
