Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Our school is full of excited, vociferous readers. However, we are a small school, and so we do not have a school library. As one of our five English teachers, my classroom library often operates as a library for students of all grade levels to come and select books.
Students are constantly asking for new books because they quickly read their way through the library's current selection.
I do what I can to support their reading habits by buying books out-of-pocket, but I want to provide them with more choices from new and exciting authors. I also want to make sure they have both mirrors (characters and stories that represent them and their backgrounds) and windows (characters and stories that represent a wide-range of experiences outside of my students' own experiences).
In particular, I've selected books that represent diverse experience, showing complex portrayals of race, gender, class, LGBTQ+ populations, and more. I hope you'll join in supporting my students in helping them access these wonderful books.
