Vertical Whiteboards for Mathematical Problem Solving
Help me give my students vertical whiteboard surfaces to practice mathematical problem solving! Studies have shown that using vertical surfaces to problem solve is much more effective than smaller, horizontal surfaces.

My Students
My 6th graders are curious, kind, and thoughtful. They have grown to love when I challenge them to work out solutions on their own. They push themselves to step outside of their comfort zone every day!
My school is considered Title I, meaning that the majority of our students come from low-income or poverty situations.
Each and every student in my classroom loves to learn, though they all learn in different ways. We use a variety of strategies, group work, and other learning options to make sure the needs of each student are met.
My Project
These whiteboards will be used during daily group work in math. Studies have shown that working out math problems on large, vertical surfaces is much more effective than working on smaller, horizontal surfaces.
Students prefer working on whiteboards over paper; they will put in more effort and work more collaboratively with their classmates when using a whiteboard!
Wall space is limited in our classroom, but these desktop easels are the next best thing. By setting a large whiteboard up vertically, students can share their work and their thoughts with everyone in their group at one time. This makes discussion about the problem feel natural and encourages them to give one another feedback.
More than half of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
