My Project

My students are bright, curious, and full of questions that reach far beyond the standard math curriculum. They’re gifted fourth- and fifth-graders who crave challenge, love solving problems, and light up when they discover something new. But too often, traditional classroom tools and structures don’t meet their need for deeper thinking.

That’s why I want to create a Thinking Classroom—a space designed to spark curiosity, encourage collaboration, and make mathematical thinking visible.

Inspired by Dr. Peter Liljedahl’s research, this approach gives students the chance to stand, move, and work together at vertical whiteboards, solving rich problems that encourage students to think at a deeper level. Instead of sitting at desks filling out worksheets, they'll be engaging with each other’s ideas, defending their reasoning, and stretching their thinking.

To support this setup, students will also need dry-erase markers, magnetic erasers, and magnetic hooks to display tasks directly in their line of sight. This type of learning environment shifts learning from passive to active and gives students the freedom to take risks, explain their thinking, and grow into confident, capable mathematicians.

With your help, I can bring in the materials that will transform our space into a dynamic learning environment. These tools will help my students see that math isn't just something they do—it's something they think about, talk about, and grow with.
