Vertical Garden Potting

My Project

Although students are all eager to learn, they are even more engaged when given opportunities to learn in an environment other than the 4 walls of our classroom and get their hands dirty.

In addition to planting and maintaining the garden, students will be responsible for researching plants and how they grow, which plants grow best in our environment, creating informational "plant tags" to go with the plants, and designing how they want to beds to be planted in the off season.

The garden will also carry over into the summer and be maintained by students in summer school as well as several deserving families who may not have space for a garden to benefit from the summer yield. As we plant, we will focus on a variety of plants that can grow and produce in different seasons of the year such as broccoli and lettuce in the cooler spring months, salad ingredients that can produce in the hot summer months and pumpkins and gourds that will be ready to harvest for the following class in the fall for our units on pumpkins and lifecycles! This is truly a project that will benefit many students and continue to grow in years to come! Our garden is beginning to look awesome and we are almost ready to plant in the beds. We also need a shelf and liners because you can never have too many shelves to store everything on. The trash can will be used to put the potting mix in after we add coco coir, perlite, and vermiculite. It keeps it dry and easy to fill our pots as well. The weed eater string is the best string I have found to cut all the grass and bushes around the farm.
