Help me give my students at our school, in ALL 3rd-grade classrooms, hands-on learning opportunities to practice problem-solving, multiplication fact fluency, and critical thinking in math through the use of VersaTiles cases and multiplication grids.
Our third-grade Cougars are resilient, hard-working, and eager to learn! They love hands-on opportunities to practice the skills they've learned, so we want to feed that love of learning! VersaTiles cases are a great way to engage students in mathematical problem-solving and critical thinking skills. VersaTiles cases involve a learning method where students can work on a variety of subjects, whether it be math, science, or other content areas. We are writing this grant with math in mind for our third graders!
Students will be engaged in each VersaTiles math activity by placing the numbered side of their tiles face up in the answer case after solving each problem, then flipping the closed case to self-check and see if the pattern on the back of their tile case matches the pattern on the math activity.
Students love the Solve it! Flip It! Check It! sequence. VersaTiles cases are uniquely designed so students can explore hands-on skills practice in the classroom. We plan to use the VersaTiles cases for math to start, but as students become more comfortable with them, we'd love to explore using them for science skills practice as well.
Additionally, the multiplication grids are another great hands-on way for our third graders to learn math concepts like multiplication, division, operations, graphing, and fractions. These grids allow students to visualize multiplication easily when inserting different grid sheets to represent multiplication. We know how important multiplication and these pre-requisite math skills are in third grade, as they are essential in understanding more complex mathematical concepts in fourth and fifth grade. Creating a solid understanding of multiplication early on will allow our students to feel more successful as mathematicians in the future.
