This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We are a Title I school in an urban area of Los Angeles. More than 85 percent of the students are eligible for free breakfast and lunch. The students come to school every day ready to learn and appreciate the resources we are able to provide, but those resources that the school can supply are fewer and fewer each year as the budget shrinks.
My class of curious fourth graders is packed with motivated learners who want to know more about the world around them.
They like to ask questions and love getting detailed answers as they explore their environment. Finding the materials to use for hands-on exploration, however, can be a challenge.
My Project
VersaTiles will help my students build their literacy proficiency in a challenging and rewarding way. This program provides an engaging, screen-free alternative to traditional skills practice such as worksheets. Students have fun answering questions while building a puzzle, and then self-checking their answers for immediate feedback.
Using games and puzzles to reinforce important vocabulary, grammar, and reading skills allows even the most reluctant readers and writers to improve their language abilities.
The VersaTiles will be a beneficial and motivating activity for students who finish work early. They will also be useful in small groups for differentiated instruction. By the very nature of the VersaTiles, students will be able to work at their own level and feel successful when they check their answers.
