This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach middle school students in the north east Los Angeles area. I work specifically with students with IEPs who have learning disabilities. Many of our students are also designated as Long Term English Learners who are struggling to meet the literacy demands necessary to reclassify. Over 90% live below the poverty line and meet the requirements for free or reduced lunch.
Unfortunately, along with these difficulties, far too many of our students come to us below grade level in reading.
Some students are reading as low as first or second grade level. Though many struggle academically however, they are full of life and creativity and have big dreams for their futures!
My Project
My students need high quality books and magazines to keep them engaged while doing lots and lots of reading this year. At our school, we work to match students with books that meet them at their guided reading level, while keeping them engaged in topics of interest. Our students have already had year after year of expensive curriculum purchased by the school district that has not met their needs! Research has shown time and time again that when students are able to choose books that interest them and can then read lots and lots of books at their level, they make impressive gains in literacy!
I have seen with my own two eyes, students who have not grown as readers for four or five years, make as much as two years worth of growth in one year!
The key to these success stories has been a vast and varied classroom library that students can choose from, while giving them the time to read in school under the supervision of motivated, knowledgeable teachers. I know progress like this can happen for every student at our school if we have the books to keep them reading voraciously.
