Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We are a Title I school in southern California. Most of my students come from low-income families, and many do not stay at the same school for more than a year. These students are shuffled from one school to the next due to overflow and bus restrictions. This contributes to an unbalanced education. Unfortunately, I can't do anything about those circumstances.
However, I can give these young learners a thirst for knowledge and the ability to use logic and communication to find information for themselves.
This is the first year we are teaching at a distance. This is going to be equally challenging for teachers, parents, and students. Our students are in first grade and have not had experience with technology and need a tremendous amount of support. Thank you for your help in making this transition as smooth as possible.
My Project
COVID has changed many things on campus, including food availability.
While our students have access to food, they receive the same four items over and over and over and over!
There are 4 breakfast items and 4 lunch items that are rotated throughout the week. And 2 of these items are disliked by most.
I'd like to have snacks for next year that offer a little variety to break up the monotony of sustenance. Snacks will have to be individually wrapped for safety and two of the breakfast items are bars, so I have carefully chosen dried fruit and cracker items that they do not receive at school.
Regardless of their economic status, all kids deserve edible food that tastes decent and offers sufficient nutrition. For some students, this is the only food they get all day.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
