My Students
As an inner-city charter school, we get a unique mixture of students who are either eager for an academic challenge, or else seeking a place of acceptance. However, regardless of their reason for joining us, they all show the same wonder at the world around them, and a shared question of "why". Examples of this include, "Why did soldiers fight in a line during the American Revolution?" or "How does steam-power work?" or "How is steel made?" A majority of my students have passed the jadedness that one sees in high school and are not afraid to ask the questions they are curious about!
My Project
Currently my school does not have custodial staff. Instead, teachers are requested to clean their own rooms. Although I am definitely capable of vacuuming my classroom, with the addition of grading, prepping and extra-curriculars, this adds extra time to my day that takes away from time spent focusing on my classes.
The day-to-day detritus of a classroom (pencil shavings, paper trimmings, hair and other debris) accumulates quickly.
With this vacuum, not only will I be better able to keep my classroom clean, but I will be able to do so more routinely (daily instead of weekly at best). It will also free me up to focus more on what matters: my students and my content.
