Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Everyone knows at least one child who thinks a little differently, learns a little differently from others. They need extra processing time, hands on practice, or high stimulation to focus. This technology is for them.
I have 21 wonderful students.
We are in a small, inner-city school in a very impoverished area. We were made a Turnaround school in 2010, having "not made adequate progress" the years before. With a whole new staff, and a new, amazing principal, we are pushing these children as far as we can. Late nights, early mornings, we are her working to get the job done. We are fighting a slue of social factors pitted against us: poverty, illiteracy in the home, single families, domestic violence, homelessness, non-English speakers, family disengagement and pretty much any barrier you can name, we are facing it. But we are winning. And we will continue to push.
My Project
I was recently trained on some of the available educational apps for young learners. I was inspired by all of the great activities that could reinforce the hard work we are already doing. With this iPad, I could teach a lesson, and then have a struggling learner do extra practice on their own. It would be a highly motivating and exciting way for them to keep practicing the skills I have taught. From handwriting, the hearing books read aloud, to math facts, to watching educational videos to build background knowledge before reading a non-fiction book. The list of possible uses for this technology is endless.
I know this is expensive technology, and times are tight for everyone but every small amount helps.
I just hold onto hope that perhaps this one purchase could make the difference to that one child. The one who is almost there, but just needs a little something extra. Thank you for holding onto that hope with me.
