This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach a loving, energetic group of at-risk HS students at an urban Title I school in the heart of Manhattan. Many are English Language Learners, have special needs, or are safety transfer students who struggle because they have not had equal opportunities to gain the fundamental skills they need to be successful in school.

Many of my students next year will be upperclassmen who are having a visual arts course for the first time in their high school career.

While my students tend to struggle and be far behind grade level in mathematics, they tend to love and thrive off of the arts in all aspects. This means that their engagement skyrockets when the arts are involved in our mathematics classes.

This year also yields a specifically challenging year, coming off of remote learning due to COVID-19. Many of my students fell ill, had parents fall ill, and lost family members due to the virus, and many had very difficult living situations that they have been coping with being quarantined in for the past few months. Despite these challenges though, my students have remained resilient and eager to come to school.

My Project

"Why are we learning this?! Can't we learn something we actually need to know in life?!" As teachers, we are faced regularly with trying to balance the push for state tests and the drive to give students a meaningful education that they can connect with and call upon in the future. Luckily, my students are fortunate enough to be able to explore connections to the real world, social justice and their everyday lives through multiple disciplines and mediums in our visual arts course.

This year, we will spend a lot of time exploring our usual drawing units, while also adding some printmaking, carving stamps, and sewing as new mediums for expressing ourselves in our art class.

I am requesting print blocks and ink, colored pencils, thread, paper and more.

These supplies are a collection of basics needed for all of the multidiscipline units that we will cover in the art class. Students will learn to use these new techniques to explore their own identities and how they fit into various communities and society as a whole. By the end, they will also leave class with amazing pieces of work, including their own stamps, their own fabric designs, and their own pillows!
