My Project

As a school counselor, I have seen the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on all grade levels. I notice that students greatly need support in connecting with one another, expressing themselves, identifying emotions and working through difficult emotions in healthy ways. The arts are a powerful and open-ended way for students to freely express themselves in ways that can feel both safe and vulnerable. The resources I have selected will invite students to be taken seriously as artists. The moleskin notebooks will invite 4th and 5th grade students to be able to freely reflect and draw in the notebooks of professional authors and poets. Oil pastels and watercolor pencils give students more avenues to explore different art mediums as a way to express their internal emotions - as both a cathartic means and a way to share them with others. Children need the skills to be able to express themselves and tell their stories. When the social-emotional needs of students are met, they are able to focus on their academic tasks and goals. The arts and social-emotional work are in high demand - and I believe that these supplies will help the students at our school to move in a healthy direction.
