Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach high school science in a large urban high school in one of the largest cities in the country. I teach in one of the worst areas of that city and work with a high risk group of students. All of my students are Black and Latino. Graduation rate is less than 50% and over 97% of the students in my school receive free or reduced lunch. I have been blessed to have an amazing group of students in my seminar class. Similar to a homeroom but with an academic focus, I will be with my 18 freshman boys and 3 freshman girls for the next four years. I will help them develop Math and English skills to pass my state's high school exit exam, advise them on passing their classes and getting involved with extracurricular activities, and help them apply to colleges. My goal is to call each one of their names as they walk on stage in their high school graduation in 2013.
My seminar has very specific needs that the Wii gaming console with accessories can help. My autistic student loves video games and needs to be more physically active. My students all do. Another student has a single mom who works two jobs and has no time to raise her son. He loves interaction with me and his peers. I have a third student who is trying to pass the exit exam on the first try. All of my boys are bouncy freshman who need to move around the classroom during lessons. Why not use technology to help them learn and become more physically fit? The skills of teamwork and academic skills will help them get to college- skills they are not learning from home.
The Wii gaming console and accessories that I have requested are going to help in so many ways:
1) I will use the Wii Brain Academy to stimulate their mind in a new and exciting way (please don't tell them!)
2) Bringing Wii into my class will provide an opportunity for the bully in my classroom to develop teamwork skills with everyone else.
3) My students who need to move around (because they sit for over 6 hours a day) will be able to.
4) My students will use the Wii Fit and balance board to learn about how to incorporate physical fitness into their daily routine.
5) The games will be an incentive for good behavior.
6) Students will be able to use during lunch time and after school tutoring-helping them stay out of gangs and off the street. If I can keep them alive and safe I can help them achieve their goals of graduating and going to college.
You might be thinking- really? This teacher wants to use a gaming system in her classroom? Our kids are technologically savvy and we have to adapt in America's classrooms. The group of students I work with are challenging. Over 5 receive special Ed services, 3 are in gangs, 2 are gifted, and 5 don't speak any English. But guess what? I still expect to see them graduate in 4 years, despite all of their challenges. They will be the first in their families to do so. I have high expectations and high hopes for each of them to graduate and go to college. This proposal will help them do just that. Thank you for your consideration.
