Here at our Middle school, my co-speech provider and myself facilitate social groups. Students who are chosen for this group benefit from a structured place to learn and practice social skills.
A couple of years ago our school began a positive reinforcement program in which students were rewarded with “Grizzly Bucks”.
When someone was needed to operate a store in which “Grizzly Bucks” could be redeemed, us speech providers thought it would be a great experience for our social group students. Not only will they get experience with applying social strategies, they will also get the opportunity to feel special as they are given a special task. The store has been a success, selling prizes such as the cherished “Homework Pass” and always popular, “Lunch with the Principal”.
After interviewing students, they requested more tangible items such as small treats.
We therefore are hoping this donation will keep business booming at the school store and give our students a continued opportunity to practice the very important skills of communication with their peers.
