Using the Past to Help Create a Bright Future

My project needs 7 books that explain the past, along with 18 copies of The Diary of Anne Frank.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Cohen's classroom raised $342

This project is fully funded

I was in my fourth grade classroom in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania introducing a story about two famous women from history. When I asked the children whether they had ever heard of Eleanor Roosevelt, they stared back at me with blank faces.

I tried to jar the students memories asking if they knew who Franklin D. Roosevelt was. Again they didn't really have any knowledge of who he was and when he lived. I started to explain to them about World War II. I also mentioned the Holocaust and again they didn't know what I was speaking about. The fact that this generation of children has no idea of what happened to six million Jews was truly upsetting. When I see a gap in knowledge I feel that it is my responsibility to find a remedy.

The solution to my problem is to find resources that can truly speak to each child. I decided that I would use Anne Frank's dairy as a beginning to form a literature circle. In this way , the children could learn about the Holocaust through a young girls eyes. Anne Frank would be someone they could relate to and identify with. Together we could transport these children to another time and place. I would use other non-fiction books that could support Anne Frank's dairy with true accounts of World War II and the Holocaust.

The Holocaust really did happen and it is an important part of history that should never be forgotten. With your support the children will learn essential factual information . I believe that looking at and learning about our history will help empower a brighter future for generations!
