About My Students

Our students learn in a New York City middle school. They are primarily African-American and Hispanic, and about 40% of them are Special Education students. Many come from low-income households. Some are a part of military families. They are currently in the midst of a significant chapter in their lives, as they are in middle school.

I've always thought that middle school years are a vital time period for inner-city children, as this is often when some children start making the wrong choices. I became a teacher, in part, to set a good example for children who need role models in their lives. My students are special because they accomplish so much despite coming from so little.

One academic skill that will help my students become college and career ready is being able to revise and edit their written work. We're human, so we're all bound to make mistakes - especially during writing! I quickly write emails often and I only notice mistakes after rereading once or twice. This habit of revising and editing is fairly commonplace among adults, yet many of our students avoid it. Writing is an essential tool of communication for our students. They need to become better writers to thrive in a global economy. This project will surely strengthen their writing skills. A social-emotional skill that would be developed is teamwork. Students will have to work together to create educational games centered around revising and editing. The most rewarding educational games will be made by those groups who work best for the common good; this is what teamwork, whether in life or in the workplace, is all about.

In Their Own Words

Revising and editing is usually rushed when we write our essays. If we didn't rush through these important steps of the writing process, our essays would be better. We would be better writers. To address this problem, we want to use the desktop computer to create fun games involving revising and editing! By creating games about revising and editing, everyone would be involved because kids love to have fun. We would all become better writers if this idea comes to life!

This idea won't work unless we make fun games about editing and revising. We want to see which group of students in our class can make the best games. Our class will be divided into groups of 5, with each group having to work together to create a fun, educational game. It's up to us to make this project a success! We're up for the task!

Writing takes a lot of work. You can't create a great writing piece in one day. It's a process. The revision and editing steps are very important in that process, but our classmates struggle with it. If we made fun games about revising and editing, we really think it will make our classmates become better writers. With your help, we could make this happen!
