This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach Living Environment (Biology) to 128 9th grade students in a low-income district of the Bronx. Because of financial constraints and a lack of resources, our students have not had the opportunity to explore the world of microorganisms in detail and gain the knowledge of basic science principles that comes with doing so. It is difficult to conceptualize what a cell is, what it looks like, how it divides, and how microorganisms move without seeing them with your own eyes. I want to give my students the opportunity to see these fascinating microorganisms and truly understand the intricacies of the microscopic world through hands on experiences. Unfortunately our school does not have much of the science equipment needed to make this desire a reality. In order to learn about cells, bacteria, and other microorganisms, students need to see and study them first hand. It is difficult to ensure all 32 students in a classroom with 8 microscopes are able to find and identify the organisms and other substances being viewed under microscopes. To enhance students’ learning experiences I would like to purchase a digital camera for use on a microscope. This camera will be used to capture live images as students make exciting discoveries on different microscopes around the classroom and project them onto the front board for the whole class to view. We will even be able to print and hang these images for the whole school to see. The digital microscope camera you donate to our classroom will be the first of its kind that any of these students have ever used. It will make it easy to share student discoveries with the whole class, even the whole school! With your donation you will be opening up the world of science to my students and inspiring them to explore the natural world! This camera will not only be used by my 120 freshmen taking Living Environment, but also by the 60 juniors and seniors taking forensic science, and hundreds of students in the years to come.
