My Students

Our students learn in a New York City pre-kindergarten through 8th grade school. They come from very diverse backgrounds. Over a third of them come from low-income households, and some of them are a part of military families. A significant part of our student body are English Language Learners (ELLs); that is, they are new Americans. The students I teach all have disabilities, as they are a part of a Special Education program.

I've always thought that the elementary and middle school years are a vital time period for children, as this is often when some of them start making the wrong choices.

I became a teacher, in part, to set a good example for children who need role models in their lives. My hope is that I'll have a lasting impact on them.

My Project

I'm requesting the technology that I'd need to help my students become better readers and mathematicians. Since my class is made up of 4th and 5th graders, one group of my students participates in a "technology period" while I teach the other group. The technology period involves my students using a online math program that betters their math fact fluency, and an online reading program which betters their reading comprehension. We currently do not have a storage/charging cart to keep our technology charged and some of the technology is dated. This creates problems in the classroom; technology is often "dead," some apps do not work, and some programs run very slow. New technology like tablets and a charging cart would ensure things run smoothly in my classroom!
