I am teaching 4th grade at a Title I school in Queens. While all of our students can read, many struggle with comprehension and fluency. Fluency is a key attribute of successful readers. Students often read aloud in a staccato and/or unexpressive manner, but this is difficult to illustrate to students when they cannot listen to themselves read.
Many of the students I have this year are struggling readers who read at first and second grade (comprehension) levels. I would like to purchase individual tape recorders that students could use to record themselves reading. These recordings could then be played back so that students could truly hear how they sound when reading aloud.
These recorders would become the heart of my fluency center, the ultimate goal of which would be to have students record a book of their choice as an audiobook to donate to younger grades. This will be a great motivator in encouraging my students to become more fluent, expressive readers, and in turn, more proficient readers.
I want my students to become adept readers, but I also want them to be proud of their academic abilities. I believe improving their reading fluency will help do this and create lifelong readers and learners.
