My Project
I am the new librarian at two Title I schools. My smaller school has 200+ students and has not had a librarian in over 3 years. The average publication date of the collection is 1997, which means most books in the collection are over 25 years old.
My goal is to stimulate my students' desire to read by providing books that are current and appeal to a variety of readers.
One of my ideas to get books into the hands of readers is with the Sunshine State Young Reader Awards (SSYRA) program. Each Fall, the Florida Association for Media in Education (FAME) nominates a variety of books for SSYRA Grades 3-5 awards. I am posting on Donors Choose because I have no District money for the library, and although I have been purchasing some of the titles for the library myself, I don’t have the means to buy them all. It takes a village, right?
For further engagement, I am purchasing a related product, “brag tags”. to give each child a tagholder and the tag that corresponds to the book(s) they read. I have chosen hardcover books when available and affordable so the books will be resilient enough to be enjoyed for years to come.
