This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students predominantly reside in the Southwest side of Chicago. One of my assigned schools is one of the largest elementary Schools in the state of Illinois. I provide direct and indirect bilingual speech and language services to Prek- 8th grade bilingual (Spanish/English) special education students in 2 Chicago Public Schools. Their speech and language abilities vary. Some students communicate orally, others communicate via pictures, sign, and or communication devices. They are primarily first generation students of Mexican-American descent from low social economic status. The majority of my students receive specialized instruction in the areas of math, reading, writing. These students may also receive other service related services such as occupational, social work, physical, vision, deaf and hearing therapies.

Regardless of learning difficulties and or environmental/economic disadvantages they face, my students are dedicated to learning!

My goal is to help them be the best communicators they can possibly be by supporting them through their academic, social-emotional, and vocational needs.

My Project

With this iPad and specialized sensory stimulating chairs, my students will be better able to attend and participate in speech therapy. The use of the iPad will be a highly motivating device that will make sure to captivate my student's attention. Since many of my students present with various developmental delays that make social interaction difficulty with same age peers, the use of an iPad can further serve as a fun component of communication. There are many apps that will help my students work on their speech sounds, receptive language (WH questions, identifying basic vocabulary, prepositions, cause/effect, sequencing, etc), expressive language (formulating longer sentences with detail), social-emotional (turn taking, emotions, anger), stuttering, voice, and literacy. The wobble chairs and balance ball seats will help students who need movement, sensory seeking, and present with limited attention spans, further assistance paying attention during the lesson while supporting their needs.

My students are diverse students who need accommodations and modifications as they learn!
