Using Social Networking To Inspire Reading!

My students need 2 iPod Touch digital players to access the Internet for book trailers and commercials to inspire reading.

My Students

Why don't our kids want to read anymore? What happens to the joy of reading that our children experience when they first learn to read a book on their own? Help our students find their way back to a love of reading!

Our students attend a K-5 elementary school in a metropolitan area.

The students all live in the neighborhood surrounding the school. This area of our city has become known for having high crime rates and several low income neighborhoods. Despite the challenges that many of our students experience at home, the students and staff at our school are a family. We believe that every student can succeed and we build relationships with our students to support each one in achieving their full potential. Our mission is to instill in all children a joyful desire to learn so that they will be empowered throughout their lives to succeed in an ever-changing world.

My Project

With the addition of 2 iPod Touches to our library, students will be able to network with other students in the school as well as students and adults outside of the school building to find great books! Students will check out an iPod Touch from the circulation desk and use it to scan QR codes on library books. Through the QR codes, students will have access to book trailers and commercials, lists of similar books to read, and book reviews that will inspire them to check out and read more books. Students will also have an opportunity to create their own trailers, commercials, lists, and reviews to share with other students. Reading more improves vocabulary, helps kids learn to visualize and imagine and write better, provides characters as role models and teaches kids about social situations, teaches kids interesting and useful information and impacts success in almost every part of their lives.
