Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a PLTW teacher at John Winthrop Middle School. John Winthrop is an urban school with over 800 students. The PLTW is a pre-engineering program that introduces students to engineering concepts in the field of engineering. The program's long-term objective is to influence students to take up engineering as a career upon graduating from high school. It is a rigorous program that falls under the STEM umbrella. The curriculum is based on math, science and language arts.

Presently, the class only has three calculators to use in the calculation of introductory engineering math & graphic design in my eighth grade class. Many times the period ends before students can finish the activity because the calculators have to be passed around from student to student. The Math Department has many calculators but my period conflicts with theirs and it is not possible to borrow them. Having my own set of calculators will make it more convenient for my students to learn the math concepts presented.

The calculators will benefit my students by allowing them to finish an assigned task quicker and within the 45 minutes period. They will also learn how to better use a scientific calculator and apply many of the keys on the keyboard. The math concepts being taught will be easier to understand with a scientific calculator.

By giving me these calculators, you will make it possible for me to achieve the objectives of my lessons as laid out in my lesson plan. Also students will appreciate and be more motivated to take on more challenging problems in Math & Science classes as they relate to the PLTW curriculum.
