My Project
Since the pandemic, children have experienced stronger emotions and struggled with managing those big feelings, impacting their mental health well-being. Our school has also welcomed migrant families who have traveled far distances to reach the USA. When children are emotionally regulated, they are ready to learn. But for many of my young students, adverse childhood experiences like grief and loss, poverty and violence to name a few, make emotional regulation a tall task.
Using materials like sand to create a space to explore trauma through play and storytelling can be cathartic, healing and non-threatening.
This type of approach allows children to make connections to their thoughts, feelings and behaviors in a safe and developmentally appropriate way.
My students are in need of tools to build coping strategies for the difficult emotional experiences they have. Unfortunately, the few tools provided to my school by my district are rarely culturally appropriate or reflective of the experiences my students have.
Sandtray therapy unlike other therapeutic techniques, allows children to show their feelings rather than articulate them. It allows a person to construct a part of their world using miniature toys and sand. The scene created acts as a reflection of the person’s own life and allows the student the opportunity to resolve conflicts, remove obstacles, and gain acceptance of self.
