My Students
Our school in Aurora, Colorado is one of the most diverse schools in the state. We have been dubbed an "international school," and our yearbook staff reflects that title.
For my staffers, who collectively speak over five languages and represent cultures from all around the globe, student journalism isn't just an opportunity for them to learn digital media skills; it's a chance to think critically about whose stories are told, and how different communities are represented in the media.
Yearbook is a co-curricular class and club that empowers student journalists with the tools and knowledge to connect to their community and world in order to create a historical artifact that highlights student voices that might otherwise go unheard.
My Project
With more digital tools available than ever, and Smartphones in nearly every household, it can be easy to forget that access to high-quality technology is still not universal.
As a yearbook staff, our photography is often limited by the inequities in student's access to cameras, so by adding two more Cannon Rebels and one Go Pro Cameras to our shelves, I can ensure better access to professional-grade equipment.
Providing my yearbook staff with access to professional cameras will give them the photojournalism experience and the confidence to pursue education and jobs in digital media, bringing more diverse voices to an important industry.
