My Students

Students often bully because they haven't learned a more effective way to solve their problems. They need to be taught how to appreciate and respect differences in their world, as well as how to express their feelings. We need high interest books that show students how to treat others.

Kindergarten today is much more academic than what you may remember from your own school days.

The youngest students in the class are often at a disadvantage as they try to compete with peers who may be a full year older than them. I am excited to be teaching a transitional kindergarten class this year, offering children with fall birthdays a developmentally appropriate curriculum aligned with kindergarten standards. For many of my students, this is their first experience with formal education. I have 23 students in my class, 20 boys and 3 girls. They are energetic, curious and so ready to learn. This year will lay the foundation to their future success in education. I want them to end the year with a love for school and learning, and ready to be leaders in their kindergarten class next year. My students are very diverse, both socio-economically and culturally. They are learning about relationships and how to treat others. It is the perfect age to introduce anti-bullying concepts.

My Project

The books that I am requesting will encourage my students to value diversity and how to deal with conflicts. This will in turn lead to fewer bullying instances in our classroom. Our current class books do not meet our needs. I feel that with the outstanding literature that is published today my students would be able to identify with the characters and incorporate the decision making skills being taught. My students need to learn more ways of handling anger, bullying, teasing, diversity and poverty. Engaging literature will introduce new language that they can use to identify their feelings and then make better choices. It is important that they appreciate differences among their classmates as well as in the animal world. I want to encourage a general sense of caring for each other and their world. The more they care, the less they will feel the need to hurt others with their words or actions.

This project will help students learn how to deal with situations of bullying before they arise.

When building the future you must invest in a solid foundation. Literature is the strongest medium that can break down boundaries enabling everyone to be the best they can be. If we impact the life a child we change their destiny. Your donation will help my students become better citizens.
