My Project
The human brain understands fictional interactions in a similar manner to real-world social experiences. This makes literature a wonderful medium through which we can explore and seek to understand the human experience. Children, through literature, are able to connect with characters' challenges, feelings, and motives and can problem-solve with adults about how these fictional situations can be applied to their own lives. The resources within my project will help unique, diverse general education and special education students develop emotional intelligence and learn critical interpersonal skills such as compassion, perspective-taking, and understanding and acceptance of differences.
Using these books, I will support my students' emotional learning, emotional well-being, and compassion when attempting to understand others' emotional needs.
After I read these books with students, we "stretch our brains" by asking important questions about the story and try to apply what is learned to other situations/experiences the student might have encountered (or will encounter in the future). They are typically challenged to use one or more of the learned skills during the school day.
I will use these resources at the two schools I serve with preschool and elementary-aged (Kg-6th) students, either individually or in small groups. My role within the schools allows me to follow up with teachers and other staff members to measure the success of my students' understanding of the skills we learn!
Please consider helping me grow my library to give the students in the schools I serve a chance to learn important skills that will encourage them to be productive students, friends, and citizens!
