Using Legos to Learn About Motion, Forces, and Energy

My students need 9 lego starter packs containing gears, pulleys, wheels, and axels.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Mabry's classroom raised $575

This project is fully funded

Using Lego's to teach motion, forces and energy will inspire and engage my students in a unique, hands-on approach. I teach 7th grade science to a variety of students from rural communities, including those that are gifted, learning disabled and limited English proficient. My students are from various socioeconomic backgrounds and academic abilities. By allowing my students to take part in collaborative group work while participating in interactive lessons they will be able to learn and apply new skills to their daily lives. The materials requested will also be able to carry over into other lessons I teach such as design and modeling and scientific inquiry. Use of the materials will allow students to be active participants in science class instead of reading about science from a text book.

My students come from a variety of backgrounds and need the opportunity to take part in activities that allow them to enjoy school. I would like to see the students in my school learn the skills necessary to put them at the top of their academic ability and actively engage them in the learning process. The requested materials will allow all 7th grade students in my building the opportunity to use their creativity to learn the standard course of study in a creative, collaborative setting.

The materials requested include four Lego Starter Sets. The students will be able to manipulate Lego's in order to build and study gears, pulleys, levers, and wheels and axles. My students have the opportunity to be actively engaged in the learning process by exploring these simple machines and then using them to build compound machines. By engaging in this lesson my students will use the inquiry process to fully understand motion, forces and energy. The culminating activity will be for my 7th grade students to use what they have learned to build a Lego race car. With the use of these materials, the student possibilities are endless.

Your donation will make it possible for my 7th grade students to learn science through fun, engaging activities while allowing them to work in collaborative groups. Through the lessons I have planned, my students will have the opportunity to enhance inquiry skills, while reinforcing scientific processes and team work. The positive student interactions will reinforce peer relationships and increase motivation with in their academics.
