Using K'NEX to Build Our STEM Knowledge

My students need K'NEX to explore the world of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math or better known as STEM. What better way to do that than to build?

My Students

Walking into my room you will find many different things taking place at one time. I strongly believe that children learn by doing. I try to provide an environment where my little ones all feel that they can be successful learning and doing new things.

I have 24 little ones that are very diverse in backgrounds and abilities but they are all energetic, creative and love to learn by doing things.

As a result my room is a controlled, creative chaos at times with special pockets for quiet reading, writing and thinking. Many of my children do not have the little things that my brother and I had growing up, that we often take for granted. Unfortunately, we have a number of families that are require Temporary Housing Assistance. Without a permanent home, the children do not have a room with a toy box full of toys to build and explore with. I want to give them the opportunity to learn through play as my brother and I did Legos, building blocks, Lincoln Logs, Tinker Toys, Erector Sets and many others.

My Project

I have been looking for ways to bring STEM projects into my classroom. One item I found was a toy we did not have as children, K'NEX. We have a red tub of K'NEX in our classroom that we use to build and label different structures that align to our units of study. Both boys and girls are engaged and eager to build new things. It has been wonderful to see them working cooperatively and problem solving while developing their engineering skills. I am hoping to make K'NEX a more valuable part of my classroom. I found materials and kits that support geometry, levers, pulleys, gears, and many more science concepts that can be very abstract and difficult for little ones to grasp. I am hoping to give my children the opportunity to build items, explore, make mistakes, learn from their mistakes and to see themselves as engineers, scientist and mathematicians..

I have requested the K'NEX Education Introduction Kits because that is what I want to provide my children with, an introduction.

I want to help develop their prior knowledge that many of them are unfortunately unable to obtain by playing with their building toys at home.
