My students need demonstration chess instruction wall boards, demo tripods, basic club combo chess sets, a library of chess DVDs, a variety of travel chess sets, and chess clocks.
FULLY FUNDED! Mr. G.'s classroom raised $4,593
This project is fully funded
I teach high school English Second Language (ESL) students and college-prep 9th and 12th graders. Many of the students in my classes have low academic ability and motivation. Many of the students in my classes have not developed sufficient skills to be academically successful. In addition, many of my students believe they are not meant to go to college. Everyday, I work diligently to change this belief. In order to convince them that they belong in college and for them to truly be ready to go, my students must have opportunities to meaningfully engage in learning experiences that allow them develop academically.
Recently, many of my students have demonstrated an interest in learning more about chess, and research studies have shown that there can be a strong correlation between students playing chess and gains in academic abilities.
However, with a severe decrease in educational funding, there are currently insufficient funding resources to sufficiently expand chess at my high school. As part of my goal to improve students’ skills for college, I am working to expand the chess instruction for students. Many have a current interest in chess which has sparked an interest to know more. But to increase what they know about chess and to keep this interest alive, they need access to additional chess resources. Once they get more chess resources, this will lead to increasing the requisite academic skill necessary to go to college.
If additional chess resources are purchased for my students, they will be able continue their exploration of the complexities of chess. And, they will finally be walking on a path that will culminate in the skills necessary to go to college.
When my students get to college, they are more likely to be successful because we believed in them and invested in their futures. Chess can become a portal for many marginalized students to access higher education, for some a junior college and for others a four year university.
I know times are tough for everyone right now, but these chess resources can make a huge difference in students' lives as we all work to direct their future aspirations toward college. We can make it possible for students to more powerfully think and read in the world.
