Using Book Clubs to Walk a Mile in Your Shoes

My students need access to a myriad of diverse perspectives in literature; therefore, we are requesting multiple copies of 12 novels for book clubs.

My Students

We have an opportunity to walk into a 7th grade language arts classroom in central New Jersey each day and teach students who want to learn, want to think, and want to be challenged. Students have an opportunity to read independently for 25-30 minutes on a daily basis.

Reading every day gives these 7th grade students an opportunity to foster a love of reading and build an empathetic viewpoint of not only each other in the classroom but also of people beyond the walls of our school.

My Project

Recently, Newsela published text sets related to a "Walk a Mile in My Shoes" unit. To build an inclusive, empathetic community of readers in a classroom, this unit incorporates the following text sets : African Americans, American Muslims, Rural Americans, LGBTQ, People with Disabilities, Native Americans, Ground Breaking Women, People in Slavery, Immigrants, and Veterans. Our students are currently reading these text sets which are encouraging lively discussions in our classroom, and the students are gaining a deeper, more meaningful understanding of the world in which we live. As a culminating project, we would like to have our students participate in a self-directed book club related to one of the categories above.

This will allow them to walk a mile in someone else's shoes to explore a perspective which is different from their own.

Because “it’s easy to hate what you don’t understand” as stated in The Scourge by Jennifer Nielson, we are trying to build a community of readers who are able to understand and empathize with beliefs, cultures, and ideologies that are different from their own (146). In order to do this, our students need access to diverse perspectives in literature; therefore, I am requesting sets of novels related to each of the aforementioned categories featured in Newsela. Please consider funding this diverse library collection.
