Help me give my students the tools they need to help strengthen their math skills by drawing geometric designs such as MC Escher Tessellations, Celtic designs and Islamic architectural designs.

My Students
Students at our school in Stratford, CT come from a very wide range of cultural backgrounds. The diversity of cultures is one of the most beautiful things about our school because it gives me a unique opportunity to learn from my students as well as have my students learn from each other. There are over 40 different languages spoken by our students in the high school alone. In the art classroom, my students range from grades 9-12. Half of the students that attend our school come from low-income families. During art class, many conversations come up between my students- discussions about what life is like in other countries, students teaching each other words in their own languages, and sometimes political discussions where stereotypes can be put to an end when students have the opportunity to get to know each other.
My Project
Throughout the years I have been teaching I have noticed students who struggle in creating drawing grids and creating measured drawings with a ruler and compass. As a result I would like to incorporate drawing assignments in my drawing classes and my design classes that will help strengthen my students ability to use these basic tools to create mathematically designed drawings. We would normally take a quick look at some of MC Escher’s drawings such as his tessellation designs but I would like to take it further and add a cultural component to it by having students create Celtic knot drawings inspired by the Book of Kells and Islamic drawings inspired by Islamic architecture, both rich in mathematical formulation. I unfortunately do not have some of the basic tools I would need to do projects such as these as I lack good quality rulers (cork backings that help the rulers not slip around on the paper), drawing compasses that actually work and circle templates to check for the accuracy of the drawing compasses it to create quick guidelines. Getting these supplies will allow me to teach these lessons with the proper tools.
