Using Art to Express Oneself

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Many of my students live in poor, multi-family households or insecure housing. My class of 20 first graders are polite, inquisitive and energetic students who are ready to learn.

They are of varying learning abilities and I'm looking to expand my very limited art resources by increasing my access to quality fine art supplies.

My Project

I like to have the students complete art projects using acrylic paints and waters colors as well as oil and chalk pastels. The art projects are related to the stories we read in our ELA program. This meets the Nevada Academic Content Standard for ELA SL.1.5. The art projects allow students to clarify their ideas, thoughts and feelings. This is also important for for Social and Emotional Learning. Besides ELA, I like to tie in art projects with Science and Social Studies. They are always so excited when I tell them that we are going to do art.
