I want my students to create a wall mural in our classroom of The City of Embers to visually reconstruct the book.
My K-5th grade Title I public school is in a rural area located a few miles from the beautiful coast of North Carolina.
We serve many English as a Second Language students. As in most rural communities, jobs are scarce and money is tight. With state-wide district cuts, we must make the most of our supplies. My 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade Academically Gifted students are very aware of their coastal surroundings and work towards keeping their community environmentally clean for the abundant wildlife and natural resources. My students appreciate beauty in nature and are always creating this natural beauty in their assignments and projects. They learn best when they can apply their creative skills to all aspects of their learning.
My Project
My students need a class set of 20 of The City of Ember, People of Sparks, The Prophet of Yonwood, and The Diamond of Darkhold. My students want to read the book, The City of Ember by Jeanne DuPrau. This is an amazing story for young readers. We want to read the book and then create a 3-D wall mural of the three levels of the city, the Pipeworks, the actual city, and then the top, the outside of Ember. The novel describes the city in vivid detail and I want my students to create this using their artwork. Students will dress up as the different characters and workers in the city and I will take their picture and then use the pictures in the mural. This will help my students visualize what they are reading. They will create the three levels of the city using materials we have at school. I am also requesting class sets of the three books that go along with this set and Student and Teacher Study Guides. This will be an amazing project for my students to actually create what they are reading.
My students are creative and compassionate.
They sometimes do not understand that what they read can be as visually enriching as what they create. This project will give my students the opportunity to actually create a 3D mural of the setting of the city in The City of Ember. Not only will they be reading books, they also will learn to understand that comprehension can also be a form of art. Please help my students with this amazing project!
